What's with the oranges?

NIKON D70 - 1/1600 sec, f4.5 at 70mm

I played hockey (field hockey for you Americans) when I was a kid. At half time, one of the parents would rush out with a bag of oranges all cut up nicely into quarters (wedges, segments, sectors, surely there is a mathematical name for a quartered orange) and all us kids would scoff as many as we could and then run back out onto the field.

I was a fullback, on a team of pretty good players, so I used to stand down my end of the field waiting for the game to turn so that I got to play defence. I would stand there wondering what the hell the orange was supposed to be doing. I couldn't feel the vitamin C coursing in my veins. I didn't feel stronger or revived anything else. For the most part all I felt was sticky!

But they are still dragging out the oranges at half time at the kids netball games. Ali and Sarah don't look any different after a dose of orange. Maybe we feed our kids half time oranges because thats what we did when we were kids.

I wonder if the Packers or the All Blacks have orange at half time?

  • I sure they would if they could fit a sponsers message on them. I seem to remember Orange stationary was a sponser in the NRL. Did they send on oranges? NO ! What was there maketing division thinking.

  • When I was 12, my rugby coach yelled at me, "If you don't get your act together I'm going to pull you off at halftime". I yelled back, "normally we just get oranges"!

  • Dave, I've helped to man a mile station at the Madison Marathon a few times. We stand there and hand out water, gatorade, bananas and yes, oranges to the runners as they pass us by. Yes, someone should discover "why, oranges?".

  • Is the grass in this picture fake? Man, I haven't seen grass that green in a long time. We're in the middle of a drought here in the midwest, you know!

  • Oranges have a high glycemic index...they raise blood sugars quickly, excellent for half time energy boosts. Apparently the 'new' oranges are actually those jelly lollies? I suppose kids eat them more eagerly?

  • halftime oranges have been about since the old days, when oranges were served to the men in battle - giving them a boost in energy but, more importantly, making their sword-hands sticky so they didn't lose their grip.

  • actually, oranges are really bad for you at half times because of like the acids mixing with your stomach acids...so dont bring out the oranges, bring out the bananas mann!!
