This is where we went, what we listened to, tweeted, coded, blogged and spent on this day
I am endlessly fascinated by the string of computers involved in some of the most basic things that I do.
Logging in to some websites now require I get an SMS message from some system a very long way away from me. Just think of the path that message has to take from my PC connected to a website in AWS us-east-1 to finally end up on my phone, just to type a 6 digit number back into my browser.
Or when I type git push to send some very low quality python code at github.com, which does a "bunch of stuff" that then triggers a webhook to fire a request back at the very server I typed git push on to save that fact into my local mysql database again.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
@spudooli@mastodon.nzOr when I press play in Winamp on the Windows PC on one end of my desk that triggers a scrobble to https://www.last.fm/user/spudooli servers, that then triggers a request to the server at the other end of my desk just to store that play fact into a mysql database, that then inevitably gets backed up into us-east-1
@spudooli@mastodon.nzI've had a couple of glasses of wine, listened to some 80s synth pop, new wave, new romantics and at the end of this track by Simply Red I'm going to start up the PS5 and play some Battlefield 6. On a Friday night. When all the younger, faster, more lithe/agile/coordinated players, are playing.
This is going to go exactly how you think it's going to go.
