What we are doing now

Updated May 4th 2026 - This is a now page, it's to tell you what we are up to now. Updated around about the middle of each month. If you have your own site, you should make one, too.

May 2026

It looks like my Now page is a 12 month thing. Which is fine. The years are going by very fast now.

I have embraced LLMs. It became very clear to me in early Feb that this is the new normal and as Technical Director of a web production company I/we had to get on board or get run over. So we are in boots and all, up to our eye balls in AI. There is no way in the world I'd admit that on Mastodon though. It's a secret, just us to know

I am enjoying every minute I'm at work again. The pressure of productivity is crushing, and I have some regret we didn't start earlier. But there is no doubt I'm loving the dopamine hit of shipping something every couple of hours. Things that previously would have worried me about delivery within budget are much less concerning now.

I'm really enjoying coding again. I have coded so many things that there is no way I would have before either because I lack the skills or the skills required was one I didn't really want to gain for the one time I'd use it. And I have learned more about coding in the last 3 months than the last 10 years.

So to some up now? I'm coding. And loving every minute of making the internet ever so slightly bigger with my ideas.

May 16th 2025

It's been 6 months since I updated this page. I don't know why, Possibly because I forget about and time goes by. I guess I was busy with other things.

The daughter that went to Europe came home. It's good to have her back

The other daughters came home for a month for Christmas and then back to Melbourne.

Some good projects at work for the start of the year, interesting, challenging, all paying the bills. Not a bad start to the year given the hopeless world situation.

I think if I had a CMS for this page it might be easier to keep up to date. Perhaps I add that to the dev list.

November 2024

Not sure how 2 months go by without an update, but here we are.

The other daughter left to live overseas in October, thats now all the kids away. It's great they are having adventures, but it's also back to just me and Gabba figuring out how to be just us. We will succeed at that of course.

A project I worked on earlier in the year won a gold Best Awward. Cool

I finally left Twitter in September. Too many bozos own it. Happy on Mastodon.

Work grinds on. Project after project. Not sure if things are picking up or not, we got quite slow there for a while. Hopefully the corner is turned, the bottom reached. Summer is near so hopefully optimistic

August 2024

Because I can't bear to waste good content, I've moved July down the page some and will keep it here for a while. Not a normal use of a Now page, but no content wasted.

Work and Melbourne

We spent a week in Melbourne this month visiting the daughters. I didn't like it. I didn't like Melbourne I mean. It was great to see the kids again.

Melbourne is just way too big and way too many people. We did see some koala and kangaroo and whales and little blue penguins and all manner of other cool birds. Also ate some good food and saw waterfalls and wandered around around some lovely little towns. And the 12 Apostles.

Work grinds on. We're working on an event coming up in Sept for gamers, with lots of moving parts and interesting engineering challenges. Enjoying the work is good.

I can see from the outdoor temperature chart over the last 12 months that we have started to come off the bottom winter temperatures now. That makes me me happy. Made it through another winter.

And I've started to recreate my music collection after digging out my CD platyer from the cupboard and realizing how good CDs sound. So far added 18 CDs back into the collection and love listening to them all over.

July 2024

Because I can't bear to waste good content, I've moved June down the page some and will keep it here for a while. Not a normal use of a Now page, but no content wasted.

Getting through winter

Even though it's been a pretty good winter so far, this is still the part of the year that I seem to just endure some.

I've been working 13 hour days for the last 2 weeks managing a digital campaign TVNZ have been running on primetime TV. It's been difficult and stressful. The thing about working long hours during the week is it also buggers my weekend when I have to have an afternoon sleep to catch up on the lost sleep. Thankfully it's over now, so onto the next thing

So, given the time of year and my general mental state, that's all I got for this month. See you next month, when we will have started the return from the bottom, heading back to summer.

June 2024

Because I can't bear to waste good content, I've moved June down the page some and will keep it here for a while. Not a normal use of a Now page, but no content wasted.

Doing 3D printing

The 3D Printer arrived and I've made some things. This and this and a thing to hold the Kitchenaid attachments and a CD stand and a little clip to the hold the printer power wire and filament wire together tidily

Next up I'm going to makes some parts bento boxes for all my electronics bits

Sadly the reason I bought the 3D printer, to print the CD drawer cog, didn't turn out great and I've just ordered the parts from Ali Express instead. Still, I can play my CDs again now, so no failure.

Fieldays

Fieldays dominates June every year. I dread it for weeks before hand, the stress of making sure its successful and being so tired all week. But once it gets going and it going well, then I quite enjoy the week, really. The 15 hour days are tough but so long as every goes well, it's ok.

For context, Satellite provides all the ticketing and access control and Exhibitor attendee tech stuff. 130,000 people get through the gates because of software and services Satellite provides.

Gabba goes down to Mystery Creek with the team and does all the cooking. She provides breakfast and dinner for the 12 - 15 people we have on site for the week.

May 2024

Because I can't bear to waste good content, I've moved May down the page some and will keep it here for a while. Not a normal use of a Now page, but no content wasted.

Learning 3D printing

My father died on January 30th 2024. I've spent the last 3 months winding up his estate. It's still not done, just need to visit the bank with a bunch of forms completed and then the job is done

I inherited some of his things that I could actually fit into our lives. Some handtools, some tool cabinets he had made, a TV and an ampliier and a record player

I restored the amp enough to make it work again. After sitting in the attic for 25 years it needed some love. And contact cleaner sprayed into all the switches and pots more than love I guess

The record player has been sent off for restoration by someone that knows what they are doing

Playing with those devices precipitated me getting out my CD player which I haven't touched in 25 years.

Of which the cog that drives the CD drawer open failed

Which precipitated finding a solution - so we've just purhcased a 3d printer. It arrives in a couple of weeks

Now I'm learning 3d design and 3d printing

Painting the house

We've been in our house now for 14 years

The previous owners painted the house right before they sold it. And they did a terrible job of it, for the most part

I should have repainted the house years ago but I've been putting it off, not wanting to learn how to paint a house

But I've now started. Doing one wall a weekend, when the weather is fine. Going to pay someone to do the high parts though

It's no where near as fun as I thought it was not goig to be. I find myself looking forward to crappy weather in the weekends now.

Coding The Book of Dave and photos

I'm made so many starts on both of these coding projects, but because I don't actually really know how I want the putput to be, coding it is tough
