For the last 12 years, my triple layer OMP driving suit (the exact same as worn by Michael Schumacher) has hung in the wardrobe (closet). Ditto for my driving boots, forlornly waiting for me to drag them out and wear them again.
Every now and then, when nobody else is at home, I put them on again just to feel the feel and smell the smell and relive the old days. Although these days it doesn't fit quite as well as when I first bought them. I've put on a little weight since 1990. I reckon I've worn them more often around the house than I have in a rally car. Yep, I do something different to what most guys do when they are home alone. Oh, I do the other thing too every now and then, I'm not completely weird!
I can still remember the feeling of slipping into them all those years ago at the speed shop. I'd never worn clothing worth more than $1000 before, I'd never bought $1100 of clothing in a single purchase before and haven't since. I was surrounded by expensive racing car parts and I was trying on brilliant red overalls in the middle of an Auckland summer. I was alive!
I could sell them on Trademe and they would be gone. But that would be admitting that my motorsport career is over, never to be seen again. By owning them, there is the slight possiblity that I could still be a professional rally car driver. You never know, perhaps one day Malcom Wilson could call me up and say, "Dave, grab your driving suit, you're up!". It would be a bit of a bugger to say, "Sorry Mal, I sold it on Trademe for $150."
Ha Ha, it makes me laugh that Malcolm's site only has a page rank of 3 and I have a page rank of 4! Perhaps I shouldn't quit my day job and should sell my driving suit after all! ;-)
I dunno if the old codger really has to re-oil the steam loco or if he does it only to please the tourists...
