I can make better photos than a monkey

NIKON D70 - 1/125 sec, f13 at 70mm

I received an email on Friday from a complete stranger that told me, among other things, that my photos are nothing special, that anyone could have taken them, that my composition lacks flair, that I don't have an eye for photography and that a monkey could take better photos than me.

I absolutely refute that criticism on 2 counts.

1. A monkey does not have the capability to procure Schott crystal wine glasses
2. A monkey could not get glace cherries home without eating them
3. I can count better than monkeys

The rest of the criticism may be true, but I defy any monkey to get the above photograph based on those 2 facts.

Oh yeah, to my critic... The shift key is on both sides of the keyboard. It's good for getting capital letters at the beginning of sentences and the start of names etc. And your PC clock is out by around 4 hours. That's pretty easy to fix too. Otherwise, thanks for the constructive criticism. It was most helpful and uplifting and supportive!

The Photo

While Gabba was out at the PTA, I played with all sorts of lighting to try and get a photo of anything that a monkey could not. I figured crystal and sweet sweet confectionery would do the trick.

  • Actually, it's a well known fact that monkeys only like the RED glace cherries. He wouldn't have eaten the green ones on the way home. (Okay... it's NOT a well known fact, but what is known is that some people live very sad and empty lives, and the only way they can get up in the morning to carry on is to attack complete strangers for no reason, spewing hateful words that achieve nothing, because no one can ever feel good about themselves when they are so mean-spirited to others. THAT is a fact, even if they don't realize it themselves.) Anyhow, not only does your photography bring joy to many each day, but your witty writing make this photoblog a must-see on a daily basis. I, like many others, appreciate your efforts, so a great big THANK-YOU for sharing your art and words with those of us who CHOOSE to click on the "spudooli" link.

  • Well, I'm not a monkey (although I do act like one) but I think your photography has a lot of substance to it. Maybe I don't have a calibrated eye for the color temperature of a computer monitor or know exactly what camera setting will give the absolute correct Depth of Field. But I do know what I like. I do know that Monkeys, although capable of many things that humans can do, wouldn't have the cognitive power to not drink the water before the photoshoot. I probably won't like everything that you do, but I like a lot of it. I think your talented enough to keep your RSS feed active so I can see what new stuff (and interesting stories) you have each day.

  • Brilliant! It's obvious that monkeys don't know how to use the shift key. A personal note to the hate-mailer: 'you been 0wned, mo'fo!!' Great shot, Dave! Really love this one!

  • I have read that people who complain all the time and have bad moods have a mineral deficiency in their diet so you should feel sorry for them, it is not their fault. I love your photos.

  • My arse has it's positives, especially if you're anti death to fur seals. Gotta love that coating. Keeps me toasty warm at night. "Mmmmmmmm, I love the way the wind blows thru your hair". Hey Dave, when your really 'kin famous, can I sell the stories to the womans weekly about how we slept together just before your wedding, and then again in that hotel downtown?

  • Any monkey with a keyboard can email criticism (or praise, for that matter). It takes a little more balls to produce something and hold it up to the world for comment. Hats off to you Dave. Keep it up.
