Last night, for some reason my webserver at home had a small spaz and decided to stop serving web pages and to ignore SSH. Great, with me 15,000km away, it was perfect timing. Especially given I could have posted my 300th photo last night. You get to see it tonight instead.
Anyway, I called Gabba on the phone and got her to reset the ADSL modem to check it wasn't a connection issue. That mission was accomplished without fuss.
Next was a long pause while I tried to decide if I could talk her through a basic set of Linux commands to try and find what was obviously now a server issue. Have you ever tried to teach a family member how to drive? Or tried to help one of your kids do their homework? Teaching people close to you to do anything slightly complicated can be very frustrating. Arguments, tears and yelling are sure to follow.
I considered how long we'd remain married if I got her to read the output from the command top and decided that there had to be a better way. I dunno how many divorces have been caused by Debian, but I didn't want to join that list!
So thanks to Scott for sorting my server for me (apache just needed a restart) and for indirectly saving my marriage.
